Any opinion he may or may not have held of the NRA means even less to me than the inane ramblings of a left-wing ideologue.? My opinion of him is unchanged.
And the message coming from Hollywood is always the same: America is the cause of all the world's problems. Only among your ilk is that considered patriotism.
Finally, your characterization of Jack as a "progressive" is laughable and a distortion of the word. He stood for personal responsibility, a concept reviled in Liberalism.

Why are they "America-hating"? Because they disagree with you and your infallible sense of patriotism? Jack? Webb happened to be a progressive on many issues, including race and especially, gun control. He despised the NRA, which you'll probably choose to deny or forget. I hope you still 'deeply admire' him, even if he took stances you personally disagreed with.

@ohiofan1989 One ... By: gymnastix. on 23 Dec 11, 13:59:16 @ohiofan1989 One such episode was of "The Jack Benny Program," wherein Benny took? a boy's scout troop known as "The Beverly Hills Beaver Patrol" to a carnival/circus, a pretty logical venue for a color TV episode. The color film of that Benny episode has also, reportedly, gone missing.
More proof this 1953 Christmas ep. of "Dragnet" was shot in color may be found on the CTVA website, as well the records of the Library Of Congress website.
@ohiofan1989 Even ... By: gymnastix. on 23 Dec 11, 13:54:56 @ohiofan1989 Even at CBS, as early as 1955, chairman William Paley had ordered all his popular TV series' to film one episode per season in color, as an experiment,? for what was considered an inevitability of future TV programming.
@ohiofan1989 Also, ... By: gymnastix. on 23 Dec 11, 13:51:49 @ohiofan1989 Also, don't forget NBC was "The Peacock Network," the first of the TV networks to go all-color. But even before that time, it was common to film special episodes of series' (especially? Christmas ones), and TV specials themselves, in the multi-hued format, for the day when such programming could be seen by all or most viewers in beautiful, rich, "living color.
@ohiofan1989 ... By: gymnastix. on 23 Dec 11, 13:49:10 @ohiofan1989 Another possibility would be to colorize a dupe of the original episode. Colorization of the black & white eps. of "Gilligan's Island" actually came out pretty well, with richer colors, as the technology has? evolved, not always appearing as those pastel-tinted fadejobs of the older MGM films colorized by Ted Turner.
@ohiofan1989 Some ... By: gymnastix. on 23 Dec 11, 13:46:49 @ohiofan1989 Some still think a 35mm color print of the original color "Dragnet" Christmas episode from 1953 may exist somewhere. But even if not, we still have a pretty good monochrome print, plus? the 1967 version that is in color. You have nicely edited both together here.
But just because the master print of a color film may be lost or destroyed does not necessarily mean a film or TV episode was not shot in color originally.
@ohiofan1989 If no ... By: gymnastix. on 23 Dec 11, 13:40:42 @ohiofan1989 If no color film of the first Christmas "Dragnet" episode exists,? how, you may ask, do we know it was shot in color?
Simple, the many millions of TV viewers who watched the color episode (the first of a regular NBC-TV series) in its original and repeated airings between 1953-58, as may be attested by the ratings of the A.E. Nielsen Company, as well the records of Mark VII, Limited, Webb's production company.
@ohiofan1989 ? Also ... By: gymnastix. on 23 Dec 11, 13:37:15 @ohiofan1989 ? Also, the location of the church in the original episode was the Old Mission Plaza Church in L.A., founded 09-04-1781, the same day as the city of Los Angeles itself, while the church of the second episode is Mission San Fernando Rey, in the San Fernando Valley.
@ohiofan1989 There ... By: gymnastix. on 23 Dec 11, 13:32:03 @ohiofan1989 There are some other differences, besides the cast changes, between these two virtually-alike Christmas episodes of "Dragnet." One? is the title of the first was "The Big Little Jesus," while the re-shot version is titled simply "The Christmas Story," but a/k/a "The Big Baby Jesus." .
@ohiofan1989 The ... By: gymnastix. on 23 Dec 11, 13:20:44 @ohiofan1989 The color master of the film was lost or destroyed, which is why Jack Webb re-staged and re-shot the episode virtually scene-for-scene (using three of the original episode's actors) for the 1967? revival of "Dragnet."

By: gymnastix. on 23 Dec 11, 13:10:52 @ohiofan1989 "The Big Little Jesus" color episode of "Dragnet," the only episode of the original series' run to be filmed in color, as well the only one not taken from the files of an actual LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) case, but from the SFPD [San Francisco? Ridiculously staged ... By: Richard40171. on 28 Sep 11, 14:33:47 Ridiculously staged scene. The TV series was so much better. This is almost camp. First, no cops are going to stay seated in a disadvantageous physical position knowing they're going to be hit upon. So this is the opposite of the TV series, which aimed (& achieved) realism. Second, the punches are ludicrously choreographed and stylized. The quip Webb speaks after hitting the table is also unrealistic. The smile after the fight is unrealistic.? The musical underscore is perfunctory.

I think anyone who thinks actors always use the products they endorse is rather naive. They're actors: they're paid to pretend on a regular basis, and, if they're good actors, we don't notice.
As far as cigs? go, I hate the smell of them, and the nasty chemistry set of toxic substances I can get from breathing in someone's else's smoke passively.

Well, yeah, I do have a? problem with cigs: they're incredibly unhealthy. But, I don't know why you're shocked that advertisers have actors claiming to use products that they don't. That's been common practice for decades. However, as I said, in Webb's case, he really did smoke those Chesterfield's--by the crate.

Well, cigarette advertisers sponsored probably a third of the programs on radio and? early television back in the 1940s and 1950s. Cigarette advertising was endemic in magazines, and some of the most amusing/horrid from a modern standpoint are the ones that have? actual doctors recommending certain brands of cigs for the throat. It just happened that Chesterfields (a once popular brand) paid for "Dragnet" and, oh brother, do Friday and friends smoke 'em on the 1950s show.

No, Webb sincerely believed everything he was saying. By: SovereignStatesman. on 29 Aug 11, 00:40:26 They should show how the LAPD REALLY treated suspects with "The Third Degree," i.e. waterboarding, beatings with rubber hoses and phone-books and other tortures; also mind-games, tricking them into false or incriminating statements, psychological manipulation and interrogations, coerced confessions,? etc.

@alexp9999 Yeah, ... By: TiminPhoenix. on 22 Feb 11, 19:11:52 @alexp9999 Yeah, this clip really shows the suspect? being abused. How silly. Ooops, did me writing silly cause you to swoon or maybe wet your panites? It apparently doesn't take much for you to wave the old liberal flag of everybody being a victim and of your apparent hate for the police? Does your arrest for walking up and down main street in your sister's dress still sting? Is that it? You poor, mistreated, misunderstood person...I'm crying on the inside for you...deep inside.
It's interesting ... By: TheFrogger15. on 05 Dec 10, 05:52:28 It's interesting how different the 50's Dragent & the 60's Dragnet were. Friday was this kickass cop in the 50's but in the 60's he just seemed to make a lot of speeches. Don't get? me wrong, both shows were great.

Cops have to ask permission to arrest someone.
Cops now imitate Military now because of hard core gangs and drugs smugglers.
I like the old days better with the cop on the beat making sure we were ok.
Now were on our own.
Cops are here to write the report after? your a victim.
Its not the cops fault, it is the lawyers.

The SLANG is great, "...the monkeys on your back, you're gonna have to help scratch it off" hahahahaha He has that speech pattern that "men of a certain age" had (my grandfathers generation), where every threat was prefaced with "Listen, Mister.." This must be the only clip where he doesn't use that phrase.. Thank? you for posting this

ahhh, the good old days--you guys really had your shit together back then. lower crime! dedicated cops! cleaner streets! too bad they? also lynched black folks. that was fail, to say the least =/
one good thing about the good old days, though: they'll never come back.

You must understand, this is a movie during that time (1955). When? the movie was made, the American pubic could not hear the frases. Or the langue that when I was a DI used. Even after the Ribbon Creek incedent we had spy's checking to see if we used that type of langue. This move was very well put together and I have a great deal of respect for the Marines that have endured the pain and sarifices they made and are still making. So Please do not let that disrepect this move.

@Mrmetichi Then you should have corrected the language used in the movie. I don't recall hearing "maggots", "motherfucker", "cocksucker" or anything remotely similar. This movie was nearly? vicious enough to convey the true experience.

I was 12-years-old when this movie was released in 1957. I joined the Army at age 18 because I could not determine the gender of a sand flea. Julie London, who played Nurse Dixie McCall on:"Emergency" was Jack Webb's first wife. (Bobby Troup, "Dr Joe Early", was Julie's second husband. Jackie Loughery, who is featured in "The D.I." was? Jack's 3rd wife. Is there anyone out there who has his staccato voice delivery? I don't think so. If his words were bullets, he would be a machine gun.
