By: coryisawake. on 24 Nov 11, 07:15:21 @rlee1976 Well, Bonney didn't make a career off of distracting audiences from flawed technique by egregiously high notes like Dessay..and has said in interviews that she always fought teachers who tried to make her lose the? youthful quality of her voice.
I guess that's why Bonney continues to sing gorgeously today and that younger singer has had countless vocal operations and continues to disfigure opera casts around the world and lower standards for? certain roles at this very moment.

It's just the nature of her voice, I know, but it's friggin annoying after awhile. This voice is much more natural-sounding and lovely. Sorry to bring ND into the picture... No. Those woman? singing with Bonney are in "trouser" roles---roles originally written for men. Since men can no longer sing that high anymore due to the discontinuation of its practice, mezzo-soprano woman who have half alto and half soprano ranges now play the men roles. "Trouser roles". You will soon find out that there are many trouser roles for many different operas-not just for Bonney's performances. :) It was nice for you to be curious about it! P.S. Bonney has been married

None taken. I fully ... By: RRydnew. on 04 Jun 10, 21:46:59 None taken. I fully understand the syntax and the semantics yet, I just find it easier to say "range" because I live here in? Dallas and its a small but very appreciative market. Here that word is applied to singers and how they sound/interpret just as it applied to terrain. EVERYTHING on that range is considered. Hopefully, you werent being sarcastic. I wasnt. I still think a contralto would be interesting but the entire opera would have to be keyed down to accomidate.
@RRydnew After ... By: andrea585ny. on 04 Jun 10, 03:15:14 @RRydnew After watching this scene a few times I went back and read older posts. After re-reading my post? and your post from a few months ago I see that I wrote range/tessitura instead of range/timbre. Must have been thinking a sentence ahead. My bad. But I still stick by the fact that there is a difference between range/tessitura. The former being a general term and the latter a specific term. I'll proof-read next time :) Peace
@RRydnew Sorry ... By: andrea585ny. on 04 Jun 10, 02:24:19 @RRydnew Sorry didn't? mean to offend. How it was explained to me a million years ago: Range = the number of notes a singer's voice encompasses. Tessitura = the specific range of pitches in a given role. Horne and Troyanos have basically the same range but the differences in timbre make the tessitura of this role a bit dodgy for Horne. I have no doubt that if Marilyn sang this role it would have been transposed down as it would not have rested comfortably in the meatiest part of her voice. Cheers
@andrea585ny
What ... By: RRydnew. on 04 Jun 10, 01:18:52 @andrea585ny
What about Upshaw? I still say (despite the composition and Troyanos' wonderful voice) the contralto would suit the role better. A touch? more masculine without being too low. BTW my Choirmaster says range or tessitura is acceptable. Well, he must have missed the lesson at Julliard.

I'll take tall, dark? and handsome (not to mention sensually voiced) Troyanos over short, plump and cherubic Horne any day.

Even lyric mezzos have a hard time getting up to the high A's that are in this role, let alone contraltos. A contralto voice would not fit a 16 or 17 year old boy's aura when personifying this role.
Yes, I know that ... By: RRydnew. on 11 Jan 10, 22:50:40 Yes, I know that both roles were composed for mezzos and yet I still would like to hear a contralto do this role. I think it would sound better and more like a young man whose voice has already broken and is now just leveling out to the adult male range. You just cant? do that with a mezzo unless they have the range of a Marlyn Horne.
I know, it seems ... By: oOcallasOo. on 11 Jan 10, 21:12:45 I know, it seems just so much more practical using a contralto for this role. But Octavian is in many aspects similar to the role of Cherubino in Mozart's Figaro - those boys are on? the verge of manhood, not quite childs yet not quite adults. Both roles have been written exclusively for mezzos - look it up, neither composer even considered a contralto. In my opinion, it makes the roles far more erotically charged to have them sung as breeches parts...
No matter how many ... By: RRydnew. on 24 Oct 09, 21:55:41 No matter how many times I see this opera, I am still amazed that they would use a mezzo rather than a contralto for Octavian. To "conduct" the flute player and then to raise his fist and "stomp off" at the end was pure comedic genius! I am just continually astounded at the versatility, intelligence, and devotion of this great man. To instinctively know exactly what to do and how to sing on stage in order to push every button his audience has is nothing short of other-worldly! There are none to compare.

Pavarotti's version ... By: Agorante. on 17 Sep 10, 21:33:17 Pavarotti's version should be the best on record. But it isn't. Carreras, Wunderlich, and Domingo are better. Of course unlike Domingo and Carreras, Pavarotti could have actually? done it live.
It's very high and has no warm up. Domingo, Carreras, Di Stefano and many others were unlikely to have risked it live.
I think Pavarotti needed to rehearse it more. He doesn't sound like he has it "in the voice" yet. The top sounds tentative rather than soaring.

@SDCmorg In fact, technically, "trouser roles" aren't written for castrati at all! There's even a "trouser role" in Il Coronazione? di Poppea, where there's also a role for castrato. Women do sing the castrati's roles now, too, but "trouser role" is really only meant to apply to the roles written that way.

I love Bonney because her natural? placement is spot-on. The thing I cannot STAND about Dessay is that damn overly-nasal middle voice placement. It's just the nature of her voice, I know, but it's friggin annoying after awhile. This voice is much more natural-sounding and lovely. Sorry to bring ND into the picture... I know it is blasphemous to do so in the presence of lovely La Bonney!

@whooisodis Just wanted to clarify that not all trouser roles were written for men, though. The ones from the baroque period? mostly were (they used to be sung by castrati), but the ones from classical period onward generally weren't (and especially not Octavian, who was sort of modeled after Cherubino)... with a few exceptions, or course (like Sesto in La clemenza di Tito or Idamante in Idomeneo). You're right about Ms. Bonney indeed. :o)

@technocrash09 No.

I don't know diddly about opera but I? love Bonney's voice. I just have a question. I've watched many of her vids and checked out some of her recordings. Seems like she performs almost exclusively with other females. Is she....um.....well....is she a lesbian? *I am just curious----not trying to discredit in any way---just curious. peace

A lot of praise has already been spoken about these two singers, and truly they deserve it!? Arguebly there is no more exquisite match around anywhere for this duett ...
