Classic piece taken from Orff Schulwerk Volume 1: Musica Poetica. Personally, I believe Gassenhauer to be one of the greatest life pieces ever created and I always feel like taking a really deep breath and running around the world when I listen to it. I hope you all feel similar when you listen to it and please feel free to comment on your feelings when you listen. Enjoy!

I sense no complex rhythms, polymeasures, polymetric arrangements, etc. I dont sense no exquisite combination of energies, no anxiety turning into happiness or romance turning through an arch of anguish into more romance. I respect it if you like it, but dont call it a masterpiece. Go listen to Mahler or Strauss if you want a masterpiece. ?
Get your data ... By: bersa888. on 07 Jan 12, 02:47:56 Get your data straight, people: this is an arrangement for "Orff instruments" (small soprano, alto xylophones, tambourine & timpani), used in special elementary school music classes alongside singing and movement/dance. The music is taken from an original lute piece from the Renaissance, arranged by Gunild Keetman (Orff's ex pupil and main collaborator, as well as a? fabulous composer). This exact score is available in Vol. 2 of "Music for Children" by Schott Publishing.

I like Orff very much, but I believe that this peaceful warm feeling of this piece comes just from munificent Renaissance times. Fortunately this era wasn't only "Greensleeves", choirs and falseters. ;-)
@BestaHansen @ ... By: sirtophamhatt. on 31 Oct 11, 16:12:51 @BestaHansen @BestaHansen Thanks for the much-needed history. It may be that what I hear as "Caribbean-sounding" is actually European music's influence on its colonies' music. It certainly gets confusing.
But it's not just the? marimba that gives it the 'warm' feeling. Orff/Keetman's harmonic and rhythmic arrangement reflect 20th century familiarity with the music of the Caribbean.
@sirtophamhatt ... By: BestaHansen. on 31 Oct 11, 06:25:25 @sirtophamhatt German countries had almost not any contacts with the great Hispanidad at that time. They were too busy with Reformation and wars among eachother. Even when? the Hapsburgs were reigning in Spain the only benefit in the Sacrum Romanum Imperium were just plants from the New World, potatoes, korn, etc...
This melody played on other instruments looses all it's Caribbean touch.

This is a strange record. Its music that Carl Orff wrote for the 1936 German Olympics. A youth orchestra is conducted by Gunild Keetman. Although famous for Carmina Burana, Orff mostly wrote music for children to play, often collaborating with Keetman. Certainly not the bombast you would except from the Nazi's Olympics.

@Cannibalizer13 Yes ... By: cathar1209. on 16 Nov 11, 23:56:27 @Cannibalizer13 Yes, the full plate armor was only used in the late? Middle Ages indeed. Keep in mind, though, that "Excalibur" did not aim to be an historical (transition Late Antiquity - Early Middle Ages) approach to the Arthurian tales (which was tried for the 1st time with "King Arthur", in 2004), but instead reflects the perception of those tales in one of the authors who wrote about it: Thomas Mallory and his "Le Morte d'Arthur". And Mallory was a late medieval writer (15th century).
