Hammock-Hanging Knots - This is a great way to hang a hammock if you don't have webbing, because it makes it so easy to adjust your hanging height. The whipping around the tree will not slip if tied corerctly. WARNING: Make sure you tie the SECOND HALF HITCH or the knot may SLIP and come loose. That'll work. I had 2 ropes dedicated to the hammock so I would leave the two figure 8 knots tied and store the 2 ropes with the hammock.

The extra loops will bear as much load as there is friction between the tree and rope. That's not to say don't use them because they do prevent slipping just not load bearing.

Thanks for watching and commenting... The portion between the two turk's heads is called "French Hitching". It is just a series of half-hitches, each one pulled tight. It does make a great steering wheel (on a boat at least!) coving if done with fairly? thin cord. In the example in the video the turks head knots and the french hitching are all done with one contiguous strand of nylon cord, so there isn't any wasted line either.

The best way to estimate is to take the rope you're using, decide on how many turns you want (how many strands will be laying next to each other - this video shows 2), and multiply by 3. Then wind that number of turns LOOSELY around your hand in a bit larger a diameter than the? final of the bracelet and add an extra turn for some leeway. So, if you are using light rope and want 4 full turns, you'll need 4x3=12 turns around your hand plus one or two more just to be safe.

No, it's a completely different knot than the Monkey's Fist.
The Monkey's fist is formed by three concentric circles wrapped in the x, y, z planes whereas the Turk's Head? is formed with the turns interwoven.
We've got a vid of a Monkey's fist posted that you can check out (or any of the others on youtube) and you'll see that they are very different.

I'm in agreement that? the square/reef knot is not very useful. It's easy to remember, sure, but that just tempts you to use it for everything. It slips when you need it to hold, and it binds when you need to untie it.

The BSA teaches the "Overhand Noose" or the "Running Loop Knot" in Cub Scouts (refer to Bear Handbook for tying illustrations). I can only think of 4 other noose knots that would work about the same but would take more time and experience to tie. NOTE: People who ask me to teach them how to tie the hangman's noose, are ether just expanding their? tying skills or looking for counseling. I hope you will find the type help you need.

Taut line hitch: the hitch slides along the rope when pushed with your fingers, otherwise it binds and does not slide. Thus you can tighten a line and it will stay tight. If you need to take up slack, just slide the hitch along the rope. Demo would be better if tied around a pole or tree. Timber hitch:? The hitch is only half of the whole knot. Take the long end, tie a half hitch at the end of the log and the log can be pulled easily. Sheet bends can join two lines of different diameters.
