I do not care for satin ribbon for ribbon embroidery, but it's up to your personal preference. Silk ribbon is easier to handle also it is softer and more fine looking.

I use any fabric that my size 22 chenille needle will pass through. That is the only requirement, if the needle can pass through it you will be able to embroider it.
